Skol Cup (2nd Round)
11th August 1992
Partick Thistle 2 Ayr United 0
Thistle negotiated a tricky tie against the ‘Honest Men’, who provided stubborn resistance for long periods of the match. Eventually Ray Farningham broke their resistance after 61 minutes, before Paul Kinnaird struck the killer blow 12 minutes from the end. Neither of these two players was known for his goalscoring prowess, contributing only 20 goals between them during their Thistle careers. Ray was easily the more prolific, finding the net 16 times.
This is the Thistle team from the featured match:- Craig Nelson, Bobby Law, (the late Don McVicar), Gary Peebles, Grant Tierney, Martin Clark, Gerry Britton, Ray Farningham, Colin McGlashan, David Irons, Ian Cameron.
Well, having cleared the Ayr United hurdle, were we now on the road to Hampden? No, not exactly. We lost in the next round to St. Johnstone in Perth, but we didn’t go down without a fight. This was a real cliffhanger. It was 2-2 after extra-time with home side able to edge the penalty shootout 4-3. The ‘culprits’ were Don McVicar and Mark McWalter, who had come off the bench. Gerry Britton also missed a spot kick during extra-time.
Reverting to the Ayr match, the late Cammy Duncan was in goal for the Somerset Park men. Cammy served Thistle very well during his time at Firhill.
Speaking of specific players, a large number of Thistle players appear on the front cover of the programme accompanying this article. How many of them can you identify? Forgot about the one in the middle of the bottom row. I don’t know how the prankster got up there in George Square to deposit the scarf, but they must have been pretty agile. If I remember right, it wasn’t removed immediately, but remained in peace for some time.
To finish, in the ‘Jags Chat’ section of the programme there is mention of a new signing from Celtic. A 21-year-old striker by the name of Gerry Britton with an impressive record at reserve level. Does anyone know what happened to him?
