Partick Thistle WFC are sad to announce that midfielder Courtney Stewart has had to make the decision to retire from football due to health reasons
As you will know summer signing Stewart suffered a serious head injury against Rangers back in August last year in what was her first competitive start as a Partick Thistle player.
Following months of tests, and on the basis of medical advice Courtney has taken the difficult, but entirely understandable, decision to retire from football.
Geordie Courtney represented Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough before making the move to Thistle in the summer.
Courtney is a genuine force of nature and made a huge impact on all at Partick Thistle WFC during her relatively short time at the Club. She leaves Partick Thistle with nothing but our best wishes for the future and with the hope that she will be no stranger to Petershill Park and Firhill in the future.
A message from Courtney
Don’t be sad it’s over, be happy it happened.
The decision to walk away from the sport I love has been the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make and one i’d have liked to have made in many years to come but devastatingly i’ve been left no choice for my own health.
I want to start by saying thank you to each and every single person that has supported me on this crazy ride I call my football journey but sadly I know it’s time for my journey to come to an end.
Reflecting on my time in football there are so many people that have helped me and so many people I owe sincere gratitude to. From coaches, to team mates, to staff (especially the physios) and all the fans at the great clubs I have been at.
To starting my journey with the best group of girls and coaches at Bedlington to then spending many unbelievable years at Sunderland, I pulled on the famous black and white stripes of The Toon (which was a dream come true) and then moved onto Middlesbrough where i made some great memories. To finally, the opportunity of a Scottish adventure at such an amazing club in Thistle. It has been the bumpiest of rides, but i’d do it all again in a heartbeat!
The one constant through it all though has been my family and friends, wow, I can’t thank them all enough for the support, guidance and love. I love you all so much!
From a young age all I wanted to do was play football, it’s all I dreamt of, it became part of my personality and I’m heartbroken that dream has been taken from me but i’m beyond grateful to have been part of such a special sport and I know the universe has other plans for me.
Here’s to the next chapter!
Thank you, football.
Biggest love,
Courts ❤️
