Dougie Canning

Everyone at Partick Thistle FC was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dougie Canning, a devoted lifelong Jags fan.

First and foremost, our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Dougie at this difficult time.

A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Dougie leaves behind a large family and even larger pool of friends who will miss him dearly.

Dougie passed on his love of Thistle to his family,  and this has resulted in a third generation of Jags fans who are regulars home and away.

Dougie himself loved nothing more than being at Firhill.

In the family’s words, “from running feeder club Sighthill Boys Club (from whom the Jags signed Alan Rough, Brian Whittaker, Andy Anderson and Nobby Clark) to running supporters’ buses, acting groundsman and cutting the pitch with a flymo during Save the Jags! … to being awarded community champion in 2018, he followed the club everywhere.”

Dougie loved football, loved Firhill and loved family. Whatever Partick Thistle gave him he repaid it in spades with his committed following, regular volunteering and the wave of new Thistle fans who followed in his footsteps.

Everyone at Partick Thistle shares in the sadness of the family but there is also immense gratitude for Dougie’s support and backing for the club, of which supporters like Dougie are the very heartbeat.

Dougie’s funeral will take place on Friday 13th September at 3pm at Maryhill Crematorium, 19 Tresta Road, Cadder, G23 5AA.

The family have requested family flowers only, while any donations can be made directly to Snowdrop Unit, Hawthorn House Care Home – there will also be a collection box at the end of the service for anyone wishing to donate, which would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, the family have asked if supporters attending our next home match against Dunfermline on Sat 21st September, will join in a minute’s applause on the 12th minute to celebrate Dougie’s life and his love of Partick Thistle.

Rest in peace Dougie Canning – once a Jag, always a Jag.
