Football v Homophobia – Ashley’s view

Ashley was one of the Proud Jags who took to the field at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill on Saturday as part of the month of action campaign by Football v Homophobia.

Here is Ashley’s own words on why Saturday was important …

For me, Proud Jags represents more than just a group—it’s a community that celebrates love, inclusivity, and belonging. Growing up with grandparents who were passionate Partick Thistle fans, Firhill holds a special place in my heart. Standing on that pitch on Saturday for such an important cause was a deeply personal and proud moment.

Having proudly marched in rallies, attended events, and stood in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community for many years, I’ve witnessed both the challenges and the incredible changes over time. It’s been heartening to see progress—more acceptance, louder voices, and stronger support. But I know how vital it is to keep showing up. When allies stand shoulder to shoulder with the community, it sends a powerful message: you belong, you’re seen, and you’re valued. Football may be a game, but it’s also a space where lifelong connections are made. Proud Jags embodies that spirit by ensuring that love, respect, and inclusion are always at the heart of what we do.

I have family and friends who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, and I know how essential it is to have spaces where people can be their true selves without fear or judgment. That’s what makes the Football v Homophobia campaign so important. Throughout February, clubs, fan groups, and organisations come together to challenge discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression within football. It’s about reminding everyone that football belongs to us all.

What struck me most on Saturday was the energy, the pride, and the sense of togetherness. It was inspiring to see people from all walks of life come together to support a message that goes beyond football—because when we stand united, we build a stronger, more inclusive community.

As we move through this Month of Action, I hope everyone takes a moment to reflect on the importance of inclusivity, not just in football but in every aspect of our lives. Whether you’re on the pitch, in the stands, or simply cheering from afar, love and pride always win.

Thank you to everyone at Proud Jags and Partick Thistle for making this possible and for standing tall for such an important cause. Here’s to making football—and the world—a place where everyone belongs.
