Freya Macdonald returns for 2022/23

Partick Thistle Women’s FC is thrilled to announce that Freya Macdonald has agreed a deal to remain a Jag for the 2022/23 season.

The defender initially came to the club as a trialist in December 2020 before joining officially in May last year on loan from Rangers, making seven appearances in SWPL2.

She then became a fully-fledged Thistle player last summer as we made the step up to the top flight of Scottish women’s football.

Freya would go on to etch her name in PTWFC history as she scored the club’s first winning goal at SWPL1 level when she fired in a late volley against Motherwell to put us 3-2 up. She would go on to score again against the ‘Well when we met in the Biffa Scottish Women’s Cup at the beginning of 2022.

She ended the 2021/22 season having made 31 appearances including 23 starts.

PTWFC manager Brian Graham said:

“We’re pleased to have Freya coming back for this upcoming season. She’s still a very young player but she played a lot of football last season which hopefully will give her a real platform to push on from.

“Obviously, her winning goal against Motherwell was a real highlight from last season. It wasn’t a position she often finds herself in but she took it brilliantly and it was a massive moment for the club as a whole.

“We’ve now got Freya, Rosie Slater, Beth McKay and Kim Murphy so there’s competition at full-back which ultimately is what you want as a manager.”

Freya Macdonald said:

“I’m pleased to be staying at the club for another season. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Partick Thistle player so far and I’m now very excited about what next season will bring for me personally and for the club as a whole.

“Playing at SWPL1 level is a fantastic opportunity for me and I feel like it’s helped me to improve myself as a player week-by-week. The league’s only going to get more competitive this year but we’re a squad with a lot of ambition so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”
