Hampden heroes Rough and Rae help Jags launch 1971 celebrations

1971 League Cup heroes Alan Rough and Alex Rae were at Firhill today to launch the start of the celebrations planned to mark the 50th anniversary of the club’s most famous success.

On Saturday, 23 October, 1971, Davie McParland’s Jags shocked the footballing world with a 4-1 Hampden final victory over Jock Stein’s Celtic, with captain Rae among the goalscorers.

This autumn, 50 years on, the club will mark the unforgettable cup run and iconic final victory with a range of celebrations, commemorative items, unique content and special events, some of which will be unveiled this week, with the club keeping some surprises up their sleeves over the next nine weeks

Rough, Thistle’s record appearance holder, and Rae – who scored the opener in the final – today helped launch the celebrations, with this Saturday marking the 50th anniversary of the opening game of the 1971 cup run.

Alan Rough said: “It’s incredible that this cup win is now 50 years ago however I can still remember it like yesterday. It was a joy to launch the programme of celebrations today after Ian and the team enjoyed such a great result at the weekend and we are all looking forward to marking the club’s most famous win by a three-goal margin in October!”

Alex Rae added: “Like Roughie said, I can’t believe it’s been 50 years. It was not only an incredible cup final but a memorable cup run from start to finish so I can’t wait to join the fans in taking a trip or two down memory lane.”
