It’s another big weekend for Partick Thistle and it’s a massive one for Gisborne Thistle too, a football club in New Zealand celebrating 100 years in existence this weekend.
This is newsworthy for Jags fans for one very special reason – when founded in 1924 by an exiled Scot, Jock MacLean, he named them after Partick Thistle hence the name Gisborne Thistle.
Remarkably, 100 years on as they celebrate their special anniversary with a series of events this weekend, Gisborne Thistle’s current head coach is none other than Tam Cramer, a Glasgow-born Partick Thistle supporter now living in New Zealand.
So from being inspired by the Jags in 1924, to being led by a Jag in 2024, this is a club we can all take to our hearts and send our very best wishes to from Maryhill to the east coast of New Zealand this weekend.
Partick Thistle manager Kris Doolan, captain Brian Graham and first team players Scott Robinson and Blair Alston did just that, taking time this week to record messages for all at Gisborne Thistle to enjoy as part of their celebrations.
“They’ve been here for 100 years, and it’s M.A.G.I.C” … from everyone at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill, a very happy birthday to all at Gisborne Thistle and here’s to the next hundred.
