In Memoriam – Malcolm MacSween (1934-2023)

Born 1934 in Shieldaig, Wester Ross, Malcolm MacSween was a Partick Thistle supporter from the mid-1950s shortly after he moved to Glasgow to study Geography at the University of Glasgow.

He bought his first season ticket in 1969 (first game against Motherwell) and sat in the old Main Stand in row F alongside his good friend David Welsh, who would watch all home games together for more than 20 years. The pinnacle, of course, was attending the 1971 Scottish League Cup Final alongside David and Aileen Welsh. Malcolm would later move to a season ticket seat in the Jackie Husband Stand from the mid-1990s.

Away from Firhill, Malcolm started teaching Geography in Glasgow in 1957 and rose to Headteacher of Abronhill High in Cumbernauld just in time to witness the filming of Gregory’s Girl in the school area. Upon the end of his teaching career there was only one place for him to hold his retirement reception – Firhill’s Aitken Suite.

Malcolm continued in regular attendance at Thistle home matches until recently, also joining fellow fans in the League Cup 50th anniversary celebrations at Hampden in 2021. As a native Gaelic speaker Malcolm appreciated the club’s recent developments in that area.

Malcolm’s recent passing is felt by his family and by his lifelong friend David Welsh, as it will be felt by club legends Robert Reid and Alan ‘Doc’ Robertson, with whom he was well acquainted.

Once a Jag, always a Jag – rest in peace, Malcolm.

A funeral service to celebrate Malcolm’s life will take place at 11am on Tuesday 4 April at Queen’s Park Parish Church, 170 Queen’s Drive, G42 8QZ.
