All at Partick Thistle were saddened to learn of the death of true Jags legend, and hall of fame inductee, Johnny MacKenzie. Club historian Robert Reid led the tributes:
“How sad it is to hear of the death of one of Thistle’s greatest ever players Johnny MacKenzie at the age of 91.
“Johnny signed for the club in October 1944 from Petershill Juniors. A flying right winger, he made 396 first team appearances scoring 53 goals. Johnny played for Scotland in the 1954 World Cup and in total was capped 9 times for his county in an era where selection opportunities were few and far between compared to now.
“The legendary Hungarian Ferenc Puskas, playing against Scotland in 1954, said he had never before witnessed wingplay of such standard nor have we as long standing Thistle supporters.
“Thanks for the memories Johnny”
The condolences of all at Firhill go out to his friends and family at this sad time.
