Jones looking to end 2019 on a high

Alex Jones got off the mark as a Partick Thistle player in the team’s 3-1 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle a couple of weeks ago and now the striker is on the hunt for his first away goal in Scotland as Ian McCall’s side travel to face Morton at Cappielow Park. Jones has now been back in the side for three games off the back of an ankle injury and wants to help the Jags climb out of the bottom two going into 2020 with a victory in Greenock. He spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the fixture:

“Everyone’s looking forward to the game. Obviously, it was a disappointing result last week but we’re looking to bounce back and return to our good run of form we’d had before the Dundee game.”

As mentioned previously, Thistle have the chance to leapfrog Morton with a win this Saturday and Alex feels like that should act as the perfect incentive for the boys ahead of the game.

“Of course that’s a good thing to aim for. We’re trying not to look at the table too much at the moment but if we can get a win and get ourselves out of the bottom two going into the New Year then it can only be a positive thing and we’ll go to their place looking to get that win to take us up a place.”

Earlier this season, Thistle went to Cappielow and took a two-goal lead against Morton but threw it away in the second half, managing to lose 3-2. Alex feels that the Jags recent improvements to their second half performances should help to ensure that doesn’t happen again.

“When you look back on that game, we should have won; no doubt about it. Two up with 20 minutes to go and we just conceded three really sloppy goals which cost us massively but we can take positives from that. We’ve played them twice this season and we should have beaten them twice.

“We’re now finishing games much stronger. When we’ve got leads late on in games we’re finding ways to grind results out and that’s something the manager has instilled into us as a group so if we can get a lead there again this weekend I reckon we’re in a much better place to hang onto it now.”

Jones’ first Thistle goal came early in the second half against Inverness the weekend before last as he opened the scoring on the way to a 3-1 victory and the Englishman says he can’t wait to get another goal.

“I’ve started a few games now and I’m feeling fitter and stronger so I want to get as many goals as I can and help the team in any way possible. Personally, I’d love to get another goal tomorrow but it’s all about the three points for the team first and foremost.”

Alex finished with a message for the supporters who he hopes will turn out in their numbers at Cappielow as they did earlier this season.

“When we went there last time, the fans packed out the away end so hopefully we can do that again. They’ve been brilliant with us and supported through some really tough spells this season so we’ll be looking to give them something to cheer about to finish off the year.”
