Lee Ashcroft signs contract extension with the Jags

Club captain Lee Ashcroft has signed a one-year contract extension at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill, with the option of a further year also included in the deal.

The central defender joined Thistle in June 2024, arriving in Maryhill with nearly 350 senior appearances already to his name primarily from spells with Kilmarnock, Dunfermline Athletic and Dundee.

Lee debuted as a Jag off the bench in a Premier Sports Cup group stage win over Montrose at the beginning of last season and would then gradually work his way into the first XI, becoming a regular starter by October.

The Barrhead native finished his debut campaign at the club having made 40 appearances with his hard-nosed defending and vocal leadership proving crucial as Thistle secured a promotion play-off spot by conceding just five times in their final nine games of the Championship season.

Ashcroft was named club captain last summer and the 32-year-old has continued to be a crucial component of the Jags’ backline, featuring 29 times so far in all competitions and even grabbing his first goal for Thistle in a win over Stranraer last July.

Thistle Head Coach Mark Wilson said:

“Lee has been an absolute pleasure to work with since I’ve stepped into the management team and I’m over the moon that we’ve secured his services beyond this season.

“He’s someone who drives the standards of the team in training and in matches; you’ll struggle to find a more determined, dedicated player anywhere.

“In the Championship you need those guys who are willing to put everything on the line to earn points and Lee certainly fits that bill. His commitment to the cause is infectious and a real asset to our team.”
