Everyone at Partick Thistle Football Club was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Glasgow politician Maria Fyfe, a long standing supporter of the club who died earlier today at the age of 82.
Aside from her excellent choice of football team to back and being a well kent face at Firhill, born-and-bred Glaswegian Maria was best known for her career in politics, serving as Member of Parliament for Glasgow Maryhill from 1987 to 2001.
Supporters of the club during that period – which included notable successes – will recall season ticket holder Maria as a regular fixture both in the match programme, to publicize her availability to constituents, and around the stadium on matchdays, where she would happily chat to fellow fans in person. Maria was always keen to champion the club and highlight its importance to the local community.
Her spirit for the underdog didn’t stop at Firhill as she spent much of her working life fighting for the causes she believed in and emerging as a role model, much needed at that time, to help encourage more women into the political front line. One campaign Maria was to be particularly passionate about, and proud to be involved in, was that which ensured equal representation for women at Holyrood.
It was perhaps fitting that one of her final contributions in office was to table an early day motion, in March 2001, where she recognised “the 125th anniversary of the founding of Partick Thistle FC, and also the 30th anniversary of their Scottish League Cup win; notes the outstanding contribution the club has made to sport in the City of Glasgow; and congratulates the club both on these important milestones, and on its current run of success.”
Partick Thistle Football Club is extremely grateful and unarguably better for the unstinting support of Maria over many decades. Today, on behalf of everyone who loves the club, we offer our thoughts and sincere condolences to Maria’s sons, Stephen and Chris, and to her wider family and close friends.
