Mayo looking to build on debut bow

Lewis Mayo made his Jags debut on Tuesday night putting in a man of the match performance in Thistle’s 0-0 draw with Queen of the South. The on-loan Rangers man performed well as part of a back three as the Jags looked defensively solid. Lewis spoke to ptfc.co.uk as the focus shifted towards tomorrow’s trip to Tannadice.

“From a personal standpoint I am delighted with how I played against Queen’s but the main focus right now is to take as many points as we can. It was frustrating not to get full points on Tuesday night as we all felt it was our game to take, we created enough chances while restricting the impact Queen of the South had on our goal.

“We’ve got to get over the fact we only got a point, take the positives and prepare for Tannadice on Saturday. We’ve got a lot of games coming up and each one is as important as the one before so we’ve got to keep going and build on this. We’ll face Dundee United with confidence as we look to get a result.”

In a game where Thistle had plenty of chances, while restricting Queen of the South to little, Lewis knows the side have to continue to build going into the games ahead.

“I think we’ve got a good starting point but it is down to us to use that as a basis and keep building going forward. We created a number of good chances and on another day they would go into the back of the net. I had a header from a corner on Tuesday which I know I should probably have scored from. We’ve added a little bit of grit and resilience to our team and when we take our chances it will hopefully result in three points.”

The deadline day loan signing missed February with a minor injury but is now ready to make an impact in red and yellow for the rest of the campaign.

“I arrived with a little knock when I signed which caused me to miss the game against Dundee, and I was cup tied for the Raith Rovers match. I’ve been very well taken care by the physio team to get back to fitness and now I’m ready to come back flying so I’m looking forward to the next few months.

“It was our first time playing together as a defensive unit but I thought we worked very well together and we felt comfortable on the pitch. Sometimes these partnerships take a bit of time to develop so it is encouraging that we slotted in together in our first game on the pitch.”

As Thistle go into a run of vital March fixtures, Lewis is desperate to get out on the pitch and pick up three points.

“Every game now is one where we feel that if we start well, get a base, then we’ll get chances to score goals in the match. We know that each opponent we face will present us with different challenges but if we can keep being solid defensively, it gives us the best opportunity to go and take all three points.”
