Following a postponement at the weekend for the game against Arbroath, Ciaran McKenna looks ahead to Tuesday’s cinch Championship game against Ayr United and shares his thoughts with ptfc.co.uk:
“The last game was the cup game against Airdrie and we were delighted to get through into the next round of the cup, but we’re really kind of anxious to get back to league games and it’s unfortunate that the game at the weekend against Arbroath got called off. We’re a few games behind now in terms of the other teams around us, so we need to try and catch up with that and Tuesday night gives us a good opportunity to hopefully go and get three points.”
McKenna delved further into his thoughts on the postponement of the Arbroath game and how that impacts the team.
“It’s been a frustrating last six weeks. After the middle of December we were playing games and then around Christmas time we had a lot of games postponed and then coming back it’s been stop start and we’ve not really had the chance to get momentum going, I don’t foresee hopefully any games being called off in February. We’ve got a lot of fixtures coming up, a lot of midweek games so I think that gives us a good chance to go on a run and get some momentum going. Going forward now it’s going to be extremely busy.”
McKenna reflected on the previous positive results against Ayr United this season and the differences Ayr’s new management could bring to the upcoming game.
“The last two times we played them they’ve been brilliant results from us scoring four goals each time, but I don’t think that’ll be the case again.
“We know we are capable of creating a lot of chances and scoring a lot of goals but you don’t really expect an easy game anytime you play in this league and I don’t think we’re expecting one tomorrow night by any stretch of the imagination. They’re coming with a new manager and a lot of their players will be having points to prove and be fighting to get in the team, so we expect a hard game as they have picked up some big results recently so we expect a tough game here, I’m sure it’ll be a close one.”
Ayr United opens up a busy February schedule with McKenna relishing the opportunity to be playing regularly in the upcoming weeks.
“I think opening up with a positive result is very important and I think the fact we’ve got two home games, Tuesday night against Ayr and home to Queen of the South, being at home we have to take full advantage. We’ve got a good home record since I have arrived at Firhill and if you look back over the past year at home we have been really strong and we’ve scored a lot of goals. We’re hoping that will continue going into a very busy month.”
