Players from Partick Thistle Football Club have visited the local East Park School and Workmates service to teach young people football skills in a bid to bring the community together and promote physical activity for all.
Located near Firhill stadium in Maryhill, East Park provides educational and supported accommodation services for children and young people with additional support needs, including autism.
Thistle stars, Adam Barton and Niall Keown visited the school today along with Partick Thistle Community Trust coach, David Galt, to teach the young people in the school and Workmates programme, football basics including kicking and shooting skills.
David Galt said:
“We were thrilled to be invited along to visit the young people at East Park. It’s really important for us to be part of the community and help out where and when we can. We jumped at the opportunity to head along and spend the afternoon helping the young people at East Park.
“We’ve worked with East Park previously on a number of occasions and the children have always been really excited to get a visit from the players – today was no exception. Adam and Niall showed the young people how to kick a ball, shoot at goal and other basic football skills which they seemed to really love. It’s a great chance for us to not only interact with our local community but also show that anyone of any ability can take part in sports in one form or other.
“East Park does fantastic work with the young people in our area so we hope we can help again in the future as seeing the smiles on their faces when the players arrived was just priceless.”
East Park provides services for young people and young adults aged 5 to 25. All pupils have a significant learning difficulty coupled with additional disabilities including physical disabilities, sensory impairment, ADHD, attachment disorder and challenging behaviour.
Christine Cranston of East Park added:
“We are grateful for the continued support from the team at Partick Thistle. The children and young people love taking part in these activities and it encourages them to keep fit and healthy.”
