Partick Thistle Women’s FC 2021/22 Awards Night

This past Saturday evening, Partick Thistle Women’s FC held their 2021/22 Awards Night in the Alan Rough Lounge at Firhill with the team, coaching staff, club sponsors and friends and family in attendance.

There were four main awards handed out with a few very special presentations also made as PTWFC celebrated a fantastic first season in SWPL 1.

Firstly, the top goalscorer award went to Cara McBrearty. The former Celtic player played the majority of the season in a slightly unfamiliar centre forward role, however was able to adapt and score eight goals along with the 12 assists she produced.

Next up was the Goal of the Season award and after more than 500 public votes, Amy Bulloch picked up the prize for a stunning volley against Hamilton Accies at Petershill Park. The midfielder has history with scoring screamers having won the SWPL Goal of the Season award last term and the goal she scored against Accies this season was every bit as spectacular, flying in off the post from 20 yards out.

Following that, the Players’ Player of the Season was won by Cheryl McCulloch. Picked by the PTWFC players themselves, this award reflects not only a high level of performance but also a considerable amount of respect from teammates for what was also brought to the squad off the pitch. McCulloch’s on-field displays have been stellar over the campaign and she also provides an infectious enthusiasm that ripples throughout the rest of the team.

The last of the four main awards was the Player of the Season award and that went to Rebecca McGowan. The midfielder only joined the club in September last year but has immediately made herself a vital part of Brian Graham’s team. Bringing energy, tenacity and plenty of quality to the Jags’ engine room, Rebecca has had a very successful first season in red and yellow.

As mentioned earlier, there were a few special presentations made and the first of those was the inaugural Colin Weir Special Recognition award which went to Craig Walker. The head honcho of the PTWFC media team, Craig has put in countless hours this season to provide high-quality coverage of the team’s SWPL 1 campaign. From livestreams and match pictures to interviews and an online programme Walker, who balances his commitments alongside a full-time job, has done an incredible job and is a deserving first recipient of this award.

Finally, there were two retirement presentations made to players who are hanging up the boots upon the conclusion of the 2021/22 season. Those two players are Cheryl Rigden and club captain, Colette Fleming, who have both enjoyed long and successful careers in women’s football but now will move on to new things. Both players were presented with a framed shirt to commemorate their contributions to the club.

Now, preparations begin for the 2022/23 season and with an expanded top division, there promises to be even more excitement than ever for Partick Thistle Women’s FC.
