The incredible sum of £40,000 was today received by the club thanks to the donations made by fans to the supporter-led GoFundMe page set up back in March.
Fund organiser Caroline Mackie has transferred the initial sum from an astonishing running total now beyond £52,000, a huge proportion of more than £200,000 generated by fans over the last five months.
Now, in the spirit of the fund, which stated from the outset that the club would “put it to good use” and after discussion with Caroline, Partick Thistle FC can confirm that the monies will go directly to Ian McCall’s football budget for the season ahead to help the management team continue to build the strongest possible squad.
Caroline Mackie, who led the fundraising, said: “The idea for the fund came from knowing that fans wanted to help the club but didn’t have a way to donate. I thought that instead of buying a matchday ticket, they could donate the price of their day at Firhill or at an away game.
“Our first target was £20,000 but once we broke through that I knew that fans wouldn’t stop there. But I never expected it would go over £50,000! I can’t thank everyone enough for sticking with this especially as it means we can make a significant donation to the manager’s football budget.”
Manager Ian McCall, thanking Caroline and fans, said: “Our fans are incredible! This is no small effort on their part, especially when money is tight, and I thank them for it. I’m delighted to accept the donation for the football budget and promise I will put it to good use in our fight for promotion in the coming season.”
Jacqui Low, Partick Thistle chairman, said: “In one of the most difficult periods in our history, from the very start this fund has consistently and tirelessly showed its support for the club. It gave the lead that encouraged so much that followed. On behalf of everyone at Partick Thistle, our sincere thanks to Caroline, her team and everyone who has supported this remarkable initiative, you have been amazing.”
