January saw Partick Thistle Women’s FC returning from the winter break to get their 2022 started with a couple of games against Motherwell and a clash with Celtic.
The highlights of the month were undoubtedly the team’s spirited performance in the cup against Motherwell that eventually saw them win on penalties and the point the team earned as they came from behind to draw against the same opposition in SWPL 1 action.
Now, it’s time to pick the standout player from the opening month of the year and we have four nominees vying for the award.
Clare Docherty
Our first candidate is last season’s top scorer Clare Docherty who popped up with some more important goals in January. After close inspection, the team’s late equaliser against Motherwell in the cup was awarded to the number eight and there was no doubt that she scored the goal to make it 2-2 at Alliance Park earning her team a very important point.
Demi Falconer
Easily one of the team’s most consistent performers, Demi Falconer’s defensive efforts have been pivotal to the Jags’ cause all season long and that was no different in January. With the team under the cosh at times in their two games against Motherwell, the backline had to hold firm and Falconer’s organisational skills and brave defending helped to ensure it did en route to cup victory and a draw in the SWPL 1.
Cara McBrearty
Dead ball situations can be so useful in football but you need someone capable of taking them with the required technique and, in Cara McBrearty, Thistle have just the player for the job. Her set piece delivery led to the late leveller against Motherwell in the cup and her arrow of a free-kick put the Jags in front the following week in the league. Those moments aside, playing in a few different roles over the course of the month Cara has proved to be a key component of the Thistle attack evidenced by the fact that she’s our current top scorer.
Cheryl McCulloch
It’s fair to say that without the efforts of Cheryl McCulloch Thistle would not be in the next round of the cup. The central defender popped up with a brilliant run down the left-hand side to set up the Jags’ first goal and then appeared on the other flank in injury time to win the free kick which led to the second. That’s not to mention the terrific defensive work that she did during the 120 minutes of the game!
