The 2022/23 SWPL1 season kicked off in August and during the first month of the campaign Partick Thistle Women’s FC have produced a number of fine performances that have deserved a stronger points return so far this campaign.
An opening day defeat to Hearts was followed up with a valiant showing against Celtic, limiting the Hoops to just a 2-0 victory, against a side who have scored 21 goals across their other three games so far this season. August was rounded off with back to back away draws at venues where Thistle failed to claim a win last campaign. A lengthy trip to Aberdeen saw the Jags battle back twice to secure a 2-2 draw before the month ending trip to Spartans could, and should, have seen Thistle come back along the M8 with all three points.
Now, it’s time to pick your PTW Player of the Month for August from the following four nominees:
Clare Docherty
Thistle’s number eight has had to adapt during the first month of the season, featuring at right-back instead of her usual attacking midfield role and doing so admirably. She put in an incredible shift to help hold free-scoring Celtic to just two goals and played a vital part in the team’s clean sheet against Spartans in Edinburgh.
Cara Henderson
One of the new faces in the Thistle squad for the new season, Cara Henderson has made a significant and immediate impact for her new club. That started on the opening day as she scored and won a penalty in our defeat to Hearts at the Oriom. Her influence was evident again at Balmoral as she won another penalty which ultimately earned the Jags a point. Having displayed her attacking prowess over the course of the first three games, she then made an important defensive contribution against Spartans, blocking a goal-bound shot on the line to preserve Thistle’s clean sheet.
Rebecca McGowan
Last season’s Player of the Season has carried her impressive form into her second season as a Jag, bringing her usual energy and enthusiasm to the middle of the park. Playing the full 90 minutes in three of the four games during August, McGowan won the ball back countless times for Brian Graham’s side and looks set for another outstanding campaign in red and yellow.
Linzi Taylor
Clare Docherty wasn’t the only Jag playing out of position in August with Linzi Taylor dropping back into centre-half for much of the month. Her first task as part of the backline was to try to stop Celtic’s potent attack and she earned the Player of the Match award for her showing against Fran Alonso’s team. She then continued in that position against Aberdeen and Spartans, helping the team to their first clean sheet of the season in the latter.
