PTWFC Goal of the Season 2022/23

In a season that has seen Partick Thistle Women’s FC continue its incredible journey up the ladder of Scottish women’s football, finding the back of the net has been a key feature of the team’s continued development.

Bettering last year’s goal tally by over 70%, the Jags have been scoring all manner of goals from 30 yard screamers to flowing team efforts and it’s now time to decide which strike was the pick of the bunch and deserves to win the 2022/23 PTWFC Goal of the Season award, sponsored by The Jags Foundation!

The nominees are:

Goal A: Jordan McLintock v Glasgow Women

Thistle earned their first three points of the season at New Tinto Park in September and they did it in some style by putting eight past Glasgow Women. The standout goal of the day came from hat-trick hero Jordan McLintock who rifled a left-footed volley into the net from just inside the box.

Goal B: Cara Henderson v Dundee United

It took until October for Brian Graham’s side to get their first home result of the season and it was a bit of magic from the team’s resident magician which earned a crucial Petershill Park win for the Jags. Cara Henderson’s initial corner was cleared after crashing off the bar but the clearance came straight back to the number 16. She took one touch to set herself, then fired a powerful strike into the back of the net from the angle.

Goal C: Rachel Donaldson v Motherwell

It’s hard enough deciding which goal is Rachel Donaldson’s best of the campaign, never mind the entire club and her winner against Motherwell is a perfect example of the type of goal she’s been scoring this season. On a wet and windy night at Peasy, the winger picked up the ball wide on the left and drove into the box before curling a perfectly placed shot into the top corner.

Goal D: Rachel Donaldson v Hamilton Accies

Donaldson’s proclivity for the spectacular was on show against away at Hamilton as she buried the second goal in a 5-1 win. Laid off to her at the edge of the box by Abbie Ferguson, she didn’t think twice about lifting a shot into the top left-hand corner to double the Jags’ lead.

Goal E: Rachel Donaldson v Queen’s Park

Her rich vein of form in front of goal didn’t end with the turn of the year and in the team’s first game of 2023, she was at it again. Thistle took on Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup and heading into the final five minutes, the Spiders had cut the away side’s lead down to one goal. Step up Rachel Donaldson to settle some nerves with another incredible goal, clearing the goalkeeper with a right-footed effort from 35 yards.

Goal F: Rachel Donaldson v Glasgow Women

Possibly Rachel’s best individual performance of the season was against Glasgow Women at Petershill Park when she notched a hat-trick in a 6-0 win and her second goal of the three was one to behold. The number 12 was able to steal the ball from Olivia King and thunder a sensational volley into the top right corner of the goal leaving even some of her teammates in shock.

Goal G: Linzi Taylor v Aberdeen

A goal of immense quality and importance, Linzi Taylor’s 54th minute free kick against the Dons kickstarted a Thistle comeback which proved vital to their top six push. With Thistle trailing by two early in the second half, it was Taylor pinpoint set piece which swung the momentum firmly back in their favour.

Goal H: Cara Henderson v Celtic

Thistle have spent their post-split fixtures going toe-to-toe with the best teams in Scotland and their equalising goal against Celtic in a 2-1 defeat showed exactly why they belong to be up there with the full-time clubs. The goal involved six players as the team went from defence to attack in double-quick time with Clare Docherty’s cross being nodded in to round off a terrific move.
