It was a season of memorable moments for PTWFC as a top six finish was secured again with some big victories. There was also the small matter of the club’s first national cup final as a memorable night at Petershill Park led to that day at Tynecastle.
There were some memorable goals within those moments and now time to decide which strike was the pick of the bunch and deserves to win the 2023/24 PTWFC Goal of the Season award, sponsored by The Jags Foundation!
The nominees are:
Goal A: Emma Lawton v Hamilton
Thistle marked their first appearance at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill with all three points as they put as many goals past Hamilton Academical in front of a celebrating Jackie Husband Stand. The standout of the afternoon came 5 minutes from full time as the ball was sent back out with the box to be collected by Emma Lawton, who fired the shot from distance into the back of the net from the underside of the bar to round off a historic afternoon in Maryhill.
Goal B: Imogen Longcake v Motherwell
November saw a hectic schedule on both the league and cup front be rewarded with a full haul of points and a place in the next round. In the last match of the month at a wet and wild K Park, Imogen Longcake capitalised on a congested final third to get the ball into space before sending the curling effort into the top corner well beyond the Motherwell keeper for her second of the match.
Goal C: Rosie Slater v Hibernian
Thistle’s Sky Sports Cup final place couldn’t have been sealed in better fashion than a long distance Rosie Slater strike. Just before the hour mark, the number two picked up the Hibernian clearance that got her into space to play the 1-2 pass which when returned saw the left footed strike bolting towards goal to book Partick Thistle’s spot at Tynecastle.
Goal D: Clare Docherty v Montrose
A busy start to the year ended with an impressive strike from the Jags defender to claim all three points against Montrose. A neat passage of play saw the through ball pass reach Clare Docherty who was advancing towards goal. From distance, her shot was sent bounding over the surrounding jerseys and into the net in an eventual 2-1 win that rounded out an unbeaten January for the Red and Yellow.
Goal E: Rachel Donaldson v Rangers
It’s difficult to think of goal of the season contenders without thinking about that history making strike from Rachel Donaldson at Tynecastle. Receiving the pass from Docherty, Donaldson gave the Rangers keeper no time to think before powering the long-range effort that rippled the back of the net from under the bar to send the record thistle crowd into delirium in the Sky Sports Cup final.
Goal F: Carla Boyce v Glasgow City
In a strong start to her Jags career, Carla Boyce was the first name on the scoresheet of the Peasy derby “away” to Glasgow City in April. First to the long overhead pass, the number 24’s chipped effort lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into the bottom of the net in the 6th minute of play.
Goal G: Kodie Hay v Hearts
Any first goal for a club is one to remember, but especially when it’s done as shown by Kodie Hay. Surrounded with the Hearts defence in the box, Hay’s clever spin sent the Jambos in the wrong direction, granting the space for the midfielder to send the shot towards the top corner to push the Jags closer to a late comeback at the Oriam.
