PTWFC secure SWPL1 top six place

There was some Jags history made yesterday as Partick Thistle Women’s FC secured a place in the SWPL1 top six, guaranteeing the team their highest ever finish in Scottish women’s football.

Brian Graham’s side clinched that top six spot in their final pre-split game of the season, away at Dundee United, knowing a win would be enough for them irrespective of results elsewhere.

The decisive moment of the day came 23 minutes into the game as Abbie Ferguson fed the ball through to Cara Henderson who calmly slotted it past the United ‘keeper to give Thistle the all-important lead.

There were chances to extend the lead and make the closing stages a bit more comfortable but that solitary goal proved enough to get them past the final whistle, the arrival of which sparked scenes of jubilation from everyone involved with the team including the section of fans, family and friends who made the trip to Gussie Park to support the Jags.

This terrific achievement is the latest chapter in PTWFC’s remarkable rise in the women’s game with the club only having been founded in 2014.

Two promotions in the team’s first four seasons saw them climb into SWPL2 where they spent two seasons before an unexpected invitation to join SWPL1 following Forfar Farmington’s withdrawal was received.

At short notice, Brian Graham and his team threw themselves into the top flight challenge and had an impressive first season, competing well in the league and reaching the semi-finals of the Scottish Women’s Cup.

Using that platform, the Jags have kicked on this season and managed to get into the league’s top six following a hotly-contested race with Motherwell and Spartans.

Now the Petershill Park side will play the other top six teams home and away with fixture details to be confirmed soon – keep your eyes on the club’s social media channels for more information.

The support the team have received over the course of this season has been a huge factor in helping them reach their goals and with 10 more challenging games to come, everyone at PTWFC would love to see as much red and yellow in the crowd as possible as the team pushes to finish the campaign strongly.
