During a busy day at sold-out matchday hospitality on Saturday past, one particular moment stood out – a unique presentation to a very special man, Robert Reid.
Already a member of the Partick Thistle Hall Of Fame, on Saturday afternoon Robert was invited to matchday hospitality at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill for the surprise award.
And so it was, that in honour of a lifetime of dedication to the Jags, Robert was presented with the unique “One In A Generation” award reflecting the fact he is just that.
In the company of his family, Robert heard first from Michael Max and then from 1971 hero Denis McQuade as to just how much they, and all Thistle fans, think of Robert.
Michael said: “Many years ago Robert Reid was inducted into the Hall of Fame but after recent discussions we decided we wanted to do something just a little more than that. That’s why we created this new lifetime achievement award for someone who is One In A Generation and it was only fitting that the award should go to Robert.”
Following presentation of the award, to a standing ovation, Denis McQuade added: “How do you do justice to a man who has done so much for this club, over decades? I’ve only known him for 54 years! – but he’d already amassed a variety of roles by the time I started here in 1970. That only continued and continues to the present day but quite honestly I could only sum him up in one way today – he is the King of Firhill!”
Finally, after a second standing ovation, Robert took to the floor to offer some words of thanks, concluding: “I am very proud to receive this honour and grateful to both Michael and Denis for the kind words. I hope to continue making a contribution in the coming years to this wonderful football club. It has certainly always been a great privilege of mine to hold different positions at the club and I intend to continue to do so for as long as I possibly can.”
