Seven Wealth Player of the Month for January

An action-packed January schedule served up six intense games across three different competitions for Mark Wilson’s Thistle side and the Jags came out the other end with seven points added to their Championship tally and progression secured in the Scottish Gas Men’s Scottish Cup.

The month had a bit of everything with last-minute winners, debut goalscorers and pressure penalties ensuring drama throughout but now with the build-up to February’s first game well underway, it’s time to decide who was the pick of the bunch in January and deserves the Seven Wealth Player of the Month prize!

Oisin Smyth

January was a whirlwind month for Oisin Smyth primarily because just two days after featuring for Thistle in a defeat to Ross County at Dingwall, he was recalled by his parent club St. Mirren and started twice for the Buddies’ first team. Oisin’s Thistle journey wasn’t over though and he returned on loan just 10 days on from his initial recall. He was straight back into the team with a stellar performance in a 2-1 win over Ayr United before bagging a brace in a 2-2 draw with St. Johnstone including a 95th minute penalty to earn a point in the battle of the Championship’s top two.

Alex Samuel

Thistle’s Welsh striker cemented his place in the Jags’ first XI over the course of January, starting all six games last month. He managed to grab himself two goals in those games; firstly in the KDM Evolution Trophy against Inverness and then against Ayr United in the Championship, the latter proving to be the winner. To wrap up a productive month from the 30-year-old, he won the last-minute penalty that Oisin Smyth converted late on at McDiarmid Park, reacting first to a high ball over the top of the St. Johnstone defence before being bundled over.

Josh Clarke

Although Josh Clarke wasn’t able to add to his seasonal total of nine clean sheets in January, he more than played his part in the team’s positive results with a number of key contributions. Against Montrose, he made a sprawling save to deny Callum Sandilands and preserve the Jags’ one-goal first half lead then with Thistle leading Ayr United 2-1 the following week he needed to make a sharp save to his left to keep George Oakley out, securing the three points for his side. Finally, at McDiarmid Park, he denied Alfie Agyeman a game-killing goal in the 87th minute to keep his side in the match and give them the platform to earn an important late point.

Tony Watt

Thistle’s number 32 set the tone for an exciting January fixture slate when he arrowed in an injury time winner against Morton at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill in the team’s first game of the new year, sparking scenes of jubilation in Maryhill. A fortnight later he scored his first brace for the club as he helped the Jags manoeuvre past Montrose into the Fifth Round of the Scottish Cup. He closed out the month with perhaps his most impressive moment when he carried the ball from the edge of the Thistle box into the St. Johnstone area before teeing up Oisin Smyth for the opening goal of our top-of-the-table clash with the Saints in Perth, one part of an excellent performance at the home of the league leaders.
