It’s been an incredible season for the Partick Thistle defence who broke record after record at the end of last year as they put together a chain of clean sheets, the likes of which the club had never seen before. Now, they’ve got the clean sheet bug back with shutouts against Airdrieonians and Ayr United in their two most recent matches and, as ever, Jamie Sneddon has been central to the defensive efforts. He spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the Jags’ trip to face Inverness on Wednesday night:
“Spirits are high at the moment for us. We’ve maybe not played as many games as we’d have liked but the results we’ve had have still been positive so we go into this game against Inverness with confidence. We know how big a game it is and we want to get a win.
“The good thing is that it was only a week ago that we last played so we’ve definitely still got that momentum and positivity in the camp. As I said, we feel like we’ve been performing well over the last couple of months and we’ll be hoping to carry that into the game this midweek.”
Inverness are one of only two teams in the league who Thistle haven’t beaten so far this season and Jamie reckons it’ll be another difficult contest at the Caledonian Stadium.
“We expect a really tough game. We haven’t got a win against them this season and the games have been some of our toughest so far. We managed a draw last time we played them but they dominated us that day so we need to make sure that doesn’t happen again so we can get the result we need.
“They probably haven’t seen us at our best over a 90 minutes. We’ve dominated large parts of plenty of games this season but apart from the first half up there we haven’t done that against Inverness. We need to make sure we show them our best this time.”
Ian McCall’s side know that a win would see them jump up two places in the league standings and Jamie says that the team are very keen to do just that.
“It’s a massive incentive for us. If we can beat them then we leapfrog them and Raith into third place and that’s going the right way in terms of where we want to be. On top of that, we’d still have games in hand on everyone else so we’ve got a chance to put ourselves in a really good position.
“At the same time though, it’s just the next game and we’ve got to treat it as normal and make sure we prepare the right way because they’ll see it as a chance to get away from us too.”
The game at the Caledonian Stadium was originally scheduled for Boxing Day when there would have been no Thistle fans but, with restrictions now lifted, there will be travelling Jags in the away end for the clash and Sneddon thinks that could make a difference.
“I’m sure we’ll take a good support up there. It’s obviously a tough trip away from home on a Wednesday night but the backing of the fans has been important for us recently. I think the difference it’ll make compared to just a home crowd or a near empty stadium will be huge for us and hopefully we’ve got something to celebrate with them at the end of the game.”
