Sneddon: We can’t afford to be complacent

Jamie Sneddon made his return to the Thistle starting XI at the weekend as the Jags beat Morton 3-0, keeping his first league clean sheet of the new season in the process. Now for the goalkeeper and his teammates, attentions turn to an SPFL Trust Trophy clash with Stranraer as the Jags look to reach the third round. Jamie spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the game:

“We’ve had a good start to the season overall. Obviously after winning 3-0 last week we’re looking to go down to Stranraer and carry that on to keep the momentum building.

“We’ve got experience of playing against teams from League Two and we know it’s always going to be a tough game. They’ll be up for it and wanting to cause an upset to progress themselves but we have to focus on our own game and trust that if we play as well as we can then we should get the job done.”

Reflecting on Thistle’s win over Morton at Firhill, Sneddon said the Jags were deserved winners in the end as they made it three wins from four Championship matches.

“I thought we were absolutely brilliant on Saturday. It felt like a very complete performance from the defence to the attack which meant I was very well protected and didn’t have an awful lot to do in terms of actual saves. All together it was very promising as a performance and we got the result that matched that.”

The Maryhill men managed their shutout despite a couple of enforced defensive changes and Jamie was very complimentary of the back four that played in front of him.

“We’ve had a few issues over the past couple of weeks with players being out so it was a tough ask for us on Saturday but the guys at the back did a great job. In particular, Shea Gordon looked very natural and solid at right-back despite not having played much football there.

“Also, Tunji was making his Firhill debut but he was very assured and we looked strong with him and Kevin Holt just in front of me so from a defensive point of view it was encouraging.”

It’s a second break from league action already this season for Ian McCall’s side but Sneddon reckons a good win in the SPFL Trust Trophy could help the Jags build confidence ahead of their return to league action against Inverness.

“The longer you can keep going in these cup competitions the better. You need to take these games seriously because they can be massive in terms of momentum. We can’t afford to be complacent and come away with a defeat which kind of stops the positive feeling we’ve got just now so it’s important that we go to Stranraer and make sure that we get the win.”
