This Saturday, as we take on Ayr United at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill, the club is proud to be hosting Thistle Welcomes Day in partnership with Jags For Good.
The aim of the day is to emphasise that Firhill is a place for all to come and enjoy 90 minutes of football. Whatever your background and wherever you come from, there’s a place for you here.
As a club with a deep connection and steadfast commitment to our local community which includes vulnerable and marginalised groups, it’s our intention to create a welcoming environment on Saturday afternoons which allows people from any walk of life to be a Jag.
Thistle Welcomes Day will include a pre-match Jags For Good collection in support of Refuweegee – a Glasgow-based charity who seek to support people who have recently arrived in the city. They will be looking for donations of toiletries, warm winter jackets, snacks (biscuits, crisps, noodles), nappies (size three and up) and footwear of any size.
Furthermore, with the help of Jags For Good, the club has donated tickets to organisations supporting refugees and asylum seekers such as Govan Community Project, Scottish Refugee Council, Maryhill Integration Network, British Red Cross, Refuweegee and the Partick Thistle Charitable Trust.
Jags For Good’s Neil Cowan said:
“We are delighted and proud to be supporting the club to deliver Thistle Welcomes Day. Football is for everyone, and Thistle should be a club that is welcoming of everyone in our city.
“Particularly for people who are new to Glasgow, football can be an incredible outlet and can provide a much-needed sense of community. And there’s no greater community to be part than the Thistle one, so it will be fantastic to see lots of people experiencing Firhill for the first time on Saturday.”
Partick Thistle Acting General Manager Graham McRoberts said:
“This initiative is incredibly important to us as a club because it’s a representation of our commitment to every member of our local community, all of whom should feel welcome at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill.
“We’re looking forward to seeing a number of supporters watching their first Thistle game on Saturday and hopefully they become Jags for good. On top of that, I’d encourage anyone who can to donate to the pre-match collection; Refuweegee’s work is pivotal and deserves as much support as possible.”
