Football returns to the Energy Check Stadium at Firhill tomorrow night as Motherwell head to Maryhill. Martin Woods adorns the cover of our matchday programme for issue 12 and he spoke exclusively to programme co-editor Christopher Dobie about his beginnings in football when he progressed through the Leeds United academy
“It was brilliant. I think the main thing about that style of set up was that everyone is in the same place. It was the Leeds United academy but everyone from youth players to first team were together. I had visited other clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea where it was a lot more sterilised. The youth teams were kept away from the first team superstars and it wasn’t easy to see them on a day to day basis.
“At Leeds it was just like it is at Thistle where players who are looking to progress in the first team can see what they are doing. I was always cleaning boots, making sure everything was ready for the first team training session and you could look over and see them training. You work harder because you know you could get the shout to go over and join them for training and I think that is a big thing because I think when you can see it you want it more.”
