Tunji Akinola leaves the club by mutual consent

Partick Thistle FC can today announce that Tunji Akinola has left the club by mutual consent.

Tunji joined the club in August 2021 after leaving West Ham earlier in the summer and made his debut as a substitute against Arbroath at Gayfield Park.

He quickly followed that with his first start as a Jag in a 3-0 win over Morton and his first goal in a 2-0 victory against Stranraer in the SPFL Trust Trophy.

The Thistle fanbase chose him as the September 2021 McCrea Financial Services Player of the Month and then in December Akinola signed a one-year extension to his contract.

Making a total of 11 apperances so far this season, opportunities have been limited and the 24-year-old now departs in search of regular football.

Everyone at Firhill wishes Tunji all the best for the future.

Thistle manager Ian McCall said:

“This is a difficult one for me because Tunji is one of the best people I’ve managed in my whole career so I’m sad to see him go. There’s a really good player in there too which we all saw at the start of last season.

“He’s not reached that level this season though and with the competition we’ve got in central defence at the moment it makes sense for him to go elsewhere and get playing again.

“As I’ve said though, Tunji’s a very well-liked person around Firhill and I think I speak for everyone at the club when I wish him the best of luck going forward.”
