‘Twas the night before…

For any young Jags fan too excited about Santa to get to sleep yet, here’s a special Christmas Eve story which can be read to you to help you nod off.

Happy Christmas Eve – enjoy!

‘Twas the night before …

‘Twas the night before Christmas, which for this we rename,

As the night before Falkirk, that late April game.

The strips they were hung by the kit man with care,

And awaited the arrival the next day of our players.

The fans they were nestled all snug in their beds,

Dreaming the best of tomorrow and what might happen next.

So what did we dream of, on the eve of that match?

I’ll tell you exactly and there isn’t a catch.

We dreamt of a team, by McCall they were led,

They walked out of that tunnel in yellow and red.

With just so much at stake, we were nervous as hell,

But the defence was rock solid with Brownlie and Bell.

Then a half hour in, just all of a sudden,

A Williamson cross, finds the head of Zak Rudden.

A nod to the corner and the Jags take the lead,

Being greedy, a second, is just what we need.

In my dream it came quickly, it was there in a jiff,

A rocket from the right foot of the mercurial Tiff.

It just kept getting better, big Brian makes it three,

How amazing can one first half possibly be?

This is one dream I just don’t want to end,

Back out for the second half the gaffer does send …

… our players to continue the most beautiful sight,

It’s Rudden to Graham, it’s Vienna, good night!

In my dream, the four soon became five, here we go,

Penrice was smiling as it’s tapped in by Joe.

This magical night seems too good to be true,

Who is that up the pitch? Jamie Sneddon. That you?

The rest is a blur, with the Jags 5-0 winning,

A crowd by the canal – “Champions”, they were singing

The game was soon over, the 90 was up.

Party time, that’s the title. Don’t you know, pump it up!

Players back to the Aitken, oh the passion they showed,

As they saluted the fans gathered on Firhill Road.

For just a short time, perfection was there,

Thistle songs, champions, red and yellow in the air.

The fans safely left when they knew that was plenty,

While the players phoned an order of MD20/20!!!

If this dream could come true, what a night it would be,

The return of the Jags, of the PTFC.

I’d had nightmares that year, of the way we were treated,

The things that I said – they could not be repeated.

But some birds can’t be caged, feathers are just too bright,

Which takes me back to this dream, before that magical night.

When I woke, I remembered, 5-0, can’t be true?

The rest is history. That night. I remember. Do you?

So the night we played Falkirk, that late April game,

My dream it came true – the league title, it came.

The gaffer he smiled, gave a look, like he knew,

As he said, you’re a Jags fan, your dreams can come true.

He walked to the distance, as the ref blew his whistle,

To confirm the new champions – of course, Partick Thistle.

So from all at Firhill, at the end of this rhyme

“Happy Christmas to all, have a wonderful time!”
