Wilson and Lets’osa visit Refuweegee ahead of Thistle Welcomes Day

A big part of Thistle Welcomes Day, which takes place tomorrow around our William Hill Championship match against Ayr United, is the pre-match Jags For Good collection in support of Refuweegee.

Set up in December 2015, Refuweegee are an organisation, driven by a combination of volunteers and staff, who strive to provide help for people who are arriving in Glasgow having been forcibly displaced.

The support they offer comes in many forms such as welcome packs, clothes and useful information about living in Glasgow with their headquarters located on the third floor of 24 George Square in the city centre.

Earlier this week accompanied by Richard Brown of Jags For Good, Mark Wilson and Ts’oanelo Lets’osa visited Refuweegee to get a taste of the work that is done to aid vulnerable individuals and families in the community.

Toured by a group of the organisation’s volunteers, Mark and Ts’oanelo were given an insight into how much effort goes into the operation and got a good look at the Refuweegee shop which is a store of clothes and toys which are available free of charge to those who book an appointment.

Before leaving, they handed over 50 tickets for Saturday’s game against Ayr United to give volunteers and visitors the chance to come along and watch a game of football in Maryhill.

The aforementioned pre-match collection will see Jags For Good volunteers stationed outside the John Lambie Stand turnstiles and at the top of South Drive ahead of kick-off tomorrow. They are looking for toiletries, warm winter jackets, snacks (biscuits, crisps, noodles), nappies (size three and up) and footwear of any size.

Thistle Head Coach Mark Wilson said:

“It was a really eye-opening experience to see everything that goes on at Refuweegee. To get an insight into the struggles that many people face when they’re forced to move across the world was humbling and I’m pleased that the club are offering their support to the cause.

“Hopefully as many Thistle fans as possible can get behind Refuweegee by donating what they can before the game against Ayr United tomorrow.”

Jags For Good’s Richard Brown said:

“Jags For Good are incredibly proud to be supporting Refuweegee, and seeing their work first-hand brought home the difference they make every single day. From running activities that help people feel welcomed and connected, to providing essential clothing, food and homeware, their work is both practical and deeply compassionate.

“It was brilliant to have both Mark Wilson and Ts’oanelo Lets’osa there as well, to witness the incredible impact of the team and the vital work that they deliver. We hope that Jags fans can really get behind our donation drive for Refuweegee before Saturday’s game, and that all the folk coming from Refuweegee to Firhill on Saturday enjoy a Thistle win!”
