Niall spent the second half of the 2016/17 season on loan at Firhill from English Championship side Reading and quickly impressed the Jags support with a series of commanding defensive performances.
Having played a key part in helping the Jags secure a top six finish in 2016/17, Niall joined the club on a permanent basis in July 2017, signing a two year contract.
Keown made his first start back at the club in Thistle Ladbrokes Premiership opener against Hibernian at Easter Road. The centre-half got his first Jags goal as well as his first red card in Thistle colours during a 4-3 loss to Aberdeen on the 26th of August 2017. Niall got his second Thistle goal as he scored the winner in a clash with Hamilton at the Energy Check Stadium.
