Sunday’s Community Champion, with our partners at McDonald’s Maryhill, is a gentleman who has experience in an extensive number of roles in and around Glasgow.
Richard Porter was born minutes from Firhill in Abington Street, which is now Taggarts in Maryhill. A father of four, who currently lives in Springburn, Richard has been nominated by NG homes, formerly North Glasgow HA having been a board member for the last 5 years. Richard also holds down a demanding post in Government, which requires him to travel the length and breadth of Britain as well as help bring up his own young family.
Richard’s job, and his role in representing parents in his children’s school has been of considerable benefit for the ng homes Board in its mission to regenerate the poorest communities that they serve.
Richard is the chair of Springburn Academy parent council and is a massive supporter of community choices giving people the ability to make decisions and changes to their local area.
Richard’s influence has also been beyond his own community and until recently he chaired the Glasgow Parent Council Forum, attended Glasgow City Council, ‘Children and Families committee’ and was deputy Glasgow representative for Scottish Parent Council.
As a Board member of NG Homes, the social landlord in Springburn and Possilpark he helps with the governance of delivering housing to over six thousand homes in these communities. They also invest in Housing, Jobs, training, and he wants to ensure North Glasgow is a great place to live, learn, visit, invest and work.
Richard has played an important part in their partnership with local schools which has allowed a close relationship supporting, health and well-being, money awareness and the environment.
Richard has said “I am passionate that people of North Glasgow have a voice, in their local community also across the city and indeed at Scottish level. I am I firm believer that everyone should have a voice and support in anyway they can.”
Having worked as part of so many projects, as a role model as an active citizen in Glasgow it is no surprise to see Richard nominated to be Sunday’s Community Champion. Everyone at Partick Thistle, along with our friends at McDonald’s Maryhill, hopes that Richard has a great afternoon here at Firhill.
