Thistle Weir Academy prepares to expand female football pathway

It’s an exciting time for women’s football at Partick Thistle, with the first team gaining promotion in 2016 and then finishing third in the SWFL Division 1 – South. And as the senior team continues to grow and develop, the Thistle Weir Academy is starting to move its focus towards ensuring the talent starts to develop at a younger level as it prepares to expand the female football pathway.

The TWA is looking to add an under 13 girl’s team, to the current provision at under 9s and under 11s. This move is part of the long term development plan to have a full tiered pathway for female players, stretching from first team down to nursey level.

This is why the Academy is now actively recruiting for players and coaches to help shape the future of women’s football at Partick Thistle.

The girl’s teams currently train on a Monday and Wednesday evening, at Springburn Park between 17:45 and 19:00. Matches take place on a Saturday morning for the under 13s and a Sunday morning for the under 9s and under 11s.

Training has now finished for Christmas but will restart week commencing 29/01/2018 with games starting shortly thereafter.

The criteria for qualifying for each of the age groups is as follow:

  • For inclusion in the under 9s, girls must be born after 01/01/2009
  • For inclusion in the under 11s, girls must be born after 01/01/2007
  • For inclusion in the under 13s, girls must be born after 01/01/05
