It was an afternoon of celebration at Lochinch on Sunday afternoon as the Thistle Weir Ladies side secured promotion to the Scottish Building Society SWPL 2. With Queen’s Park breathing down their necks in the battle for the promotion place, Thistle knew that a win against Blackburn United would secure Premier League football for the 2019 campaign.
Any nerves within the side were quickly eliminated as Loren Christie, who had netted a hat-trick midweek against Rangers Development, slotted home after only eight minutes. The lead was quickly doubled through Hawksworth as Thistle eased into the match.
There was no further scoring in the first half but Thistle would net a further four times to clinch promotion in style. Christie blasted a shot from distance beyond the reach of the goalkeeper with a top corner effort. The goal of the game arrived from McLeod who sent a half volley beyond the despairing dive of the goalkeeper into the back of the net. Loren Christie bagged two more in the dying moments, taking her tally for the day to four goals, as Thistle ran out emphatic 6-0 winners.
The full time whistle sparked scenes of celebration as a lot of hard work throughout the year culminated in promotion to the Scottish Women’s Premier League 2. The side will now begin preparations for their assault on the Premier League during the 2019 season.
