Everything Partick Thistle did in an attacking sense in their last game, against Raith Rovers, seemed to involve Scott Tiffoney whether he was creating chances or trying to finish them, the Jags often turned to the number seven to provide the offensive spark. Ultimately, it was one of the winger’s crosses that led to the dramatic winning goal as Tiffoney picked out Ross MacIver at the back post, with the ball being headed back across goal to Kyle Turner who applied the finishing touch. Now, the former Livingston man will be hoping to continue his fine form as the Maryhill men welcome Ayr United to Firhill for the second time this season. He spoke to ptfc.co.uk ahead of the game:
“It’s another big game again and after such a good result against Raith, we want to back it up with another three points. When you look at how tight the table is at the moment, three points would be huge.”
Reflecting further on the victory over Raith Rovers at Firhill, Scott feels the Jags were worthy winners on the day and fully merited their late winner.
“I think anyone who watched the game, if anyone could actually see it, would have seen that we had a good few chances and were the team on top from the first minute to the last minute. To be honest, it was about time we got a goal when we did because I thought we deserved it and if we’d come away with a draw, we’d have been frustrated with that.
“Obviously, to win it in the way we did was a great feeling. There was a buzz in the dressing room after the game and that’s carried into training since.”
Tiffoney is now hoping that Thistle can perform to the same levels they showed against Raith when they face the Honest Men.
“Well, Raith were on a great run and up near the top of the league heading into the game against us so we should take a lot of confidence from the way we dominated them. If we can replicate that sort of performance against Ayr and do the right things in the key moments then we feel we have every chance to come out on top.”
Ayr United are a side who the Jags have beaten 4-0 twice so far this season, however, Tiffoney is expecting a very tough game against the Somerset Park side.
“You just have to look at the win they got over Raith at the weekend; 2-0 was a great result for them. They’ll be on the up but we know that if we turn up we can beat anyone in the league on our day so it’s one we have to look forward to.”
New restrictions in Scotland mean crowds will one again be limited into the New Year and Scott reckons it’ll be difficult going back to a reduced crowd having experienced the fantastic Thistle support at home and away in recent months.
“Having backing from the fans is massive for us. When you don’t have fans at the game it can be hard to get up for it but it’s something that’s out of our hands obviously. At the end of the day, football without fans is quite pointless so we can only hope it doesn’t last long but in the meantime we just need to do our best to make sure the fans who aren’t able to come along have something to enjoy from home.”
