Jimmy’s footballing career began by playing in the Junior ranks and his fine performances attracted the eyes of a number of scouts to monitor his progress. Partick Thistle invited Jimmy to trial at Firhill, and after playing a number of games, he was signed up as a fully fledged Jag as the 1967/68 campaign drew to a close.
Jimmy thrust himself straight into the Jags team, netting on his competitive debut against Morton in a League Cup sectional tie. It was a scoring habit that Jimmy would get used to in his time at the club. He consistently managed to reach double figures on the scoresheet throughout a season, regardless of the form of the team as a whole. After a 14th place finish in his maiden campaign with the club Jimmy, despite another very healthy haul of 14 league goals, was part of the squad relegated in 1970 to the Second Division.
The demotion in division proved to be a blessing in disguise as Davie McParland took his first steps into management. With a young, vibrant side under his watch, Thistle only spent twelve months outside the top flight in Scotland before flying straight back to the First Division with Jimmy, once again, proving to be a trusty source of goals.
On 23rd October 1971, Jimmy was one of eleven men who walked onto the Hampden surface to create history for the club with a 4-1 success against Celtic in the League Cup final. It was Jimmy who “walked the ball into the net” to give Thistle a 4-0 half time lead that could scarcely be believed up and down the country.
Less than six months after Jimmy had immortalised himself into the Partick Thistle history books, he left the club to try his luck in England with Norwich City.
The popular player returned to Firhill in 2005 as part of the management team alongside Dick Campbell where he spent over two years in the role of Assistant Manager.
